4th of July 2025: Patriotism in Resistance

It was a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens that brought our country together nearly 250 years ago. The Founding Fathers believed in building a country that was ruled by the people and for the people. And that is the America so many of us fervently celebrate on the 4th of July.

However, as republicans worked desperately this week to pass a bill that prioritizes tax breaks for billionaires and cruelty towards immigrants above the needs of the working class, it has felt like we are slipping away from our country's core values.

The bill that passed in the Senate today will kick thousands off of Medicaid- reducing healthcare for the most vulnerable Americans and increasing the costs for everyone. This bill will drastic cut SNAP food assistance and school lunch programs leaving thousands of children without proper nutrition. This bill will shutter funding leading to hundreds of closures of rural hospitals, nursing homes, & labor and delivery services.

All of these vital resources lost in exchange for billions of dollars in tax cuts for billionaires AND billions of dollars in funding for ICE, the department that is kidnapping people off of our streets and displacing them in horrendous conditions.

At Lucia's we hope everyone is able to enjoy a safe and fun weekend with their friends and family, but we recognize there can be conflicting feelings in celebrating our country during such tremulous times.

Yet, this is still our country.

There is nothing more American or patriotic than waving our flags and standing up for liberty, justice, and equality. This 4th of July celebrate the America you believe in- loudly. Let our message be that we will fight to protect the America we love- the America that represents and protects all of her people.

Here are a few quotes I've been leaning on this week, I hope they are helpful to you this weekend as well:

"When we look at our flag and behold it, emblazoned with all our rights, we must remember that it is equally a symbol of our duties. Every glory that we associate with it is the result of duty done.-Calvin Coolidge

"Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on."-Thurgood Marshall

This will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.-Elmer Davis

“Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.-Franklin D. Roosevelt

"In the face of impossible odds, people who love their country can change it." -Barack Obama
