Happy Women's Equality Day!
In 1973, August 26th was designated as “Women’s Equality Day" to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote, and paving the way for a brighter and more independent future for all women.
Although women gained the right to vote in 1920, other rights took us much longer to achieve, such as:
1963 –The Equal Pay Act is passed by Congress, promising (although not guaranteeing) equitable wages for the same work, regardless of the race, color, religion, national origin or sex of the worker.
1964 –Title VII of the Civil Rights Act passes, prohibiting sex discrimination in employment.
1972 –Title IX of the Education Amendments prohibits sex discrimination in all aspects of education programs that receive federal support.
1974 –Housing discrimination on the basis of sex is outlawed by Congress.
1974 — The Equal Credit Opportunity Act passes. It does away with the practice of banks requiring single, widowed or divorced women to bring a man along to cosign any credit application.
1975 –The Supreme Court denies states the right to exclude women from juries.
1981 – Sandra Day O'Connor becomes first woman to serve on the Supreme Court.
1981- Kirchberg v. Feenstra overturns state laws designating a husband “head and master” with unilateral control of property owned jointly with his wife.
1993- Marital rape is considered a crime in all fifty states.
As a women-owned and operated business, we are so grateful for the women who came before us and fought for all of the rights listed above. We also know that unfortunately, our rights are not guaranteed, as we saw with the overturning of Roe v. Wade just three years ago.
As our secretary of defense (Pete Hegseth) reposts content discussing an end to women's suffrage, we must remain united and ready to stand up for ourselves and the next generation of girls. Because what men like Hegseth don't understand is that women are fighters who will continue to break the glass ceiling and demand equal treatment, no matter what lies ahead <3
